Signs of the Times: Tastee Freez
Summer is in full swing around these parts and for wacky tacky that means "Gidget" marathons, Beach Party movies, the Surfer Stomp, and delicious Summertime food! What says Summertime more than Tastee Freez? I ask you.
I will probably have to renounce my US citizenship for saying this, but I could happily abstain from every Thanksgiving dinner for the rest of my life and be gastronomically satisfied (the food is just a tad overwrought for my delicate palate). Tacos and Burgers are way more my speed, especially when advertised on a giant, orange, A-frame sign. I wish more burger joints would embrace the color orange. When did red and yellow become the sole representation of junk food? Don't you love the way the orange sign is anchored in the stripes of aqua and white tile?
I will admit that we didn't stop and eat at this particular Tastee Freez. We had probably just eaten, otherwise I would've found it impossible to resist whatever $0.99 Special that is peaking out from the sandwich board in the lower, right-hand corner. Appetite aside, there was no way that we couldn't stop to snap a quick photo of the sign. I honestly don't even remember where we were; the sign just popped up along the road on one of our meandering adventures through California. I'm still trying to watch the old waistline (or that place around my equator where a waistline would be if I had one), but every Summer vacation allows for a few moments of indulgence. Right? Am I right? Hello....
What are your favorite Summertime treats? Whatever they are, and wherever you are (in the Northern Hemisphere, at least), I hope you find occasion to enjoy them on a beautiful, sunny day!
Also, be sure to sign up for our giveaway, entries will be accepted through Sunday, June 24!
Cheers!

I'm with you on the Thanksgiving food! I tried to go on an adventure like yours yesterday but all I found were two cowboys harassing a flock of cows (it's not flock is it) and a bunch of brown hills. Maybe if I get over the hills. Your posts are always inspiring! And I do like the orange and aqua.
ReplyDeleteKeep trying for adventure Trixie, you'll find it!!! You might even see a gaggle of zebras or a pride of pigeons or a swarm of possums!!!
Deletehahahaha! Thanks retrosandy! LOL! If I see zebras in any form (gaggle or even a swarm) I will consider it a success!!
DeleteThere are zebras at Hearst Castle that can be seen from the highway, a whole colony of them!
DeleteSo they tell me whenever I go there and I've yet to see any!
DeleteAh, ice cream! Today's 97 degree heat just screamed for ice cream! My favorite is usually always chocolate, but I really need to have chocolate chip mint (the green kind with large chunks of choco from Stop & Shop) in my freezer at all times. I know, all that ice cream. Aw, heck, Mr. Tiny, as soon as it cools off, I'll go walking! :) PS I like those aqua & white tiles, too
ReplyDelete97 degrees???!!!! You deserve a scoop of chocolate AND a scoop of mint chip for that!
DeleteMake it a banana split and I am so there with you.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh. I had never had a proper banana split until I was about 21 and then my world changed forever. It was called a Havana Banana Split and the bananas were battered and fried with all the usual suspects on top. THE BEST!!!! Now I can't have ice cream, but that one banana split was enough to last for lifetime!!!!
DeleteI'm sorry, the bananas were BATTERED AND FRIED? That must be incredible!
DeleteYes, battered in a funnel cake-style batter. It was seriously one of the best things I've ever tasted! If you can find one, I highly recommend it!!!
DeleteI am of the belief that there needs to be far more orange in the world, as it is my favorite color.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite treat is Gunther's ice cream (swiss orange chip flavor to be more specific). It's a parlor close to my house that has been in business since 1937. It has THE GREATEST neon sign of an old soda jerk throwing a scoop of ice cream from one scooper, over his head to a scooper in his other hand. It's freaking fabulous.
Must go there!!! That is the second amazing place in the Sacramento area (I immediately looked it up) to which I have been referred this week. If there is anything better than a neon sign, it is an ANIMATED neon sign! The other place in those parts is Fairy Tale Town...next stop Sacramento!!!
DeleteI added the follow button on my blog just for you!
DeleteIf you ever get to Sacramento I know not only where all the amazing neon signage is, I also know where all the amazing mid century modern architecture is. I would gladly take you on the coolest tour ever. Including a bar underground in old town that has velvet wallpaper. They used to have a crooner on the weekends named Lee Diamond, but he recently relocated to Florida. Very sad.
I can see that this is the beginning of something wonderful. Thanks!!! I guess relocating to Florida is better than relocating to Heaven...well, maybe not at this time of year; it gets so humid.
Deletesporkgasm - that is my favorite ice cream flavor!!!!!! Sorry mr wacky tacky for bombarding your comments with comments :)
DeleteHahaha...don't ever be sorry. Keep the comments coming!!! Now Ian really intrigued about the flavor. What is Swiss orange chip???
DeleteOrange with dark chocolate chips!
DeleteThat sounds delicious!!! There is an ice cream shop in LA with soy flavors (so I can eat them); my favorites are banana oreo and salty chocolate. Mmmmmmmmmmm!!!!
DeleteI can't live without super-sized cola Icees or Sonic cranberry slushes in the summer. Sometimes they're medically necessary in my air-conditionless car! I love the Tastee sign, and am in total agreement about the orange and aqua color scheme. Some color combinations just scream vintage; let's bring it back!
ReplyDeleteThey just opened a Sonic near my house! I'm going to have to try their frozen treats. Just what I need, another food addiction!
