AWARDS SEASON III: Ich Liebster Dich

Oo-de-lolly!!!  Amidst the excitement of our big blog giveaway and the forthcoming holidays, I've barely had time to think about my next post.  Fortunately, the problem has been solved in a very timely fashion by The Pocket Size Wife.  Much to my surprise and honor, she has awarded wacky tacky with the Liebster Blog Award.

Blog awards are always a bit of a challenge because instead of writing about things that I like, I am forced to write about a subject on which I have a tenuous grasp at the best of times - myself.  Answering the eleven questions that are a mandate of the Liebster Award, I had to think a little harder and do a little more self-reflection than I would normally.  So, with my answers here, we can both play a special game that I like to call "Getting to Know You."

"Getting to Know You" - The Lennon Sisters on
The Lawrence Welk Show

1. What is your favorite film from the silver screen era?
This is one of those questions to which it is impossible to reply with a single answer.  I have a very large collection of movies and most are pre-1960.  Movies that I LOVE include: Sunset Boulevard, My Man Godfrey, North by Northwest, Now Voyager, State Fair, and many more.  To be perfectly honest, my favorite movie of all time would probably not be considered the silver screen's finest production but it is my "happy place" movie that I can watch anytime, anywhere - The Parent Trap (the original with Hayley Mills, Brian Keith, Una Merkel, and Maureen "Hubba Hubba" O'Hara).

2.  What is the number one thing you can't live without from your closet and why?
Hmmmm...I think I am known more for creating clothes than for the clothes I wear.  I wish that I put more effort into my clothing and appearance but I am extremely low maintenance.  I prefer work wear for everyday, so I guess the answer then is denim - jeans AND overalls.

It would make so much more sense if I worked even half as hard as these guys.

3. Who is your most influential style icon from the past and from today?
A figure from the past that I would give anything to look like (physically and clothing wise) is Cary Grant.  He had amazing style but it wasn't too precious or overwrought.  Many guys in the vintage community put in more effort, time, and energy into the acquisition, handling, and display of their clothes than any woman I know; I think that it takes all of the fun out of it.  Also, I am not a big, macho, manly man but this activity in men seems so non-masculine/prissy.  Cary Grant could look dapper, dashing, sophisticated, or relaxed without trying too hard and he always looked like a man.  My paternal grandfather had similar style; he always looked very put together without trying hard.  He wore clothing that was always appropriate for the occasion; he dressed as much for my grandma as he did for himself and he took a healthy amount of pride in his appearance.

This is what I want to look like.

4. What is your guilty pleasure?
I hate to say it, but it is TMZ, not so much the website as the TV show.  Even though I don't participate heavily in contemporary popular culture, I can't help but be fascinated by our society's (and my own) perennial obsession with celebrity.  One time I was driving through Beverly Hills and the TMZ tour bus was next to me;  I rolled down my window and kept yelling at the tourists that I was one of the Backstreet Boys.  I am a dork - a dork that thinks he's hilarious.  I'm also hooked on The People's Court but I don't feel guilty about that at all.

TMZ - I don't even know what that means??

5. What is your current obsession?
My blog.  Is that weird?  Most of the things I do in my life are things that I have to do.  My blog is something that I get to do and look very much forward to doing.  I really enjoy every aspect of it - research, creating, adventure, writing, and connecting with awesome people.

Does that make me self-obsessed?

6. What is your most prized possession and how did you come about it?
I was born into it.  I hate to be serious but my family is my most prized possession.  My parents are cool and they, if not indulge, at least tolerate my eccentricities.  My very best friends are my brothers and sisters and their support means more to me than all the collections in the world.  And I'm not sure if I've mentioned him or not, but my nephew is the light of my life!!!

My family - truly possessed.

I think all collectors go through phases of hunting, hoarding, and purging.  I am far from evolved, but I am definitely in the phase of disenchantment with my "stuff."  I am ready to organize and simplify; I find that experiences and adventures are far more fulfilling than amassing a bunch of things.  Having said all that,  I am quite fond of my sewing machine.  It wasn't cheap and I had to save to get it.  It is a tool that helps me turn my ideas into reality.

7. What famous person from the past or present do you think you look like?
I don't think that anyone in this world has ever gotten famous by looking like me - heaven help them if they do!!!  I never get stopped and told by anyone, "Hey, you look just like...." or "Does anyone ever tell you that you are the spitting image of..."  I have been told multiple times over the phone that I sound like Robert Downey, Jr.  Granted, it was by the same woman each time and she was trying to sell me something; my family has assured me that I sound nothing like Robert Downey, Jr.  I don't know, maybe Chaz Bono or Francis from Pee Wee's Big Adventure???

What do you think?

8. If you had one more day to live, how would you spend it?  What would you do?
I would spend it with my family - in shifts (we don't do well all crammed together in one room).  I think I would want to be exploring the desert or adventuring in Australia.  Food would definitely be involved.  I might even indulge in dairy products.  Lactose intolerance be damned - tomorrow I die!!!

I need some good, old fashioned nutrition!

9.  Are you a pet lover? If so, do you own any pets?
Alas, I am allergic to everything - hair, fur, or feathers practically send me into anaphylactic shock.  We have had the odd fish (they were indeed odd - at least two committed suicide) over the years but I think the allergy gene negated the animal lover gene in me.

That's me...the boy in the bubble.

10. If you could go back in time, where would you and why?
Another tough one to answer.  It is probably obvious from my blog that I am particularly enamored with the first two-thirds of the 20th Century, so I would want to pick the perfect time where I could go back and enjoy the best of every decade.  I constantly think about the business opportunities; I could go back and buy up huge quantities of vintage clothes, cars, Christmas decorations, bakelite and bring them all back to the 21st Century and get rich!

I don't think Doc and Marty ever fully explored the money making potential of the DeLorean.

11.  Who would you like to go out to lunch with from the blogging world?
Without a doubt, it would be the group of bloggers from Nashville that I follow.  If y'all (see how I included that) aren't familiar with Eartha Kitsch of Ranch Dressing with Eartha Kitsch, Lisa of My Pretty Baby Cried She was a Bird, and Rae of Say It Ain't So, then be sure to check out their blogs.  They are hilarious, they collect awesome stuff, and even though at least two of them are vegetarian, I know we would be eating beautiful layer cakes, Pac-Man cookies, and delicious Southern food.

I must pause and express my gratitude to The Pocket Size Wife for this award.  Thank you for thinking us worthy of the award; I hope we can maintain your interest and support.

If you haven't yet visited her blog, be sure to check it out.  There is something for everyone there - marriage, Morrissey, millinery, and more!!!  Thanks again!

Cheers!

Awards Season II: Lucky Sevens!

wacky tacky has received a major award!  I know what you're thinking; "Aren't we out of season for both awards and for A Christmas Story?"  Well, in our minds, it is never too late, or too early for that matter, to get into the holiday spirit by receiving a major award!

A major award

With much humility we accept The 7x7 Link Award as graciously bestowed upon us by Emily over at the very glamorous and very informative, The Silver Screen Affair.

Blog awards are an honor, a privilege, and a lot of work.  Instead of my usual stream of consciousness blather, I am directed towards genuine gratitude, self-reflection, and sharing.

The dictates of this award are three-fold.  First, the recipient must share a little-known fact about himself.  Second, the recipient must share seven of his own blog posts that were the absolute mostest (most: beautiful, popular, controversial, helpful, surprisingly successful, underrated, and pride-worthy). Third, the recipient must pass the award along to seven deserving bloggers.  And away we go...

1. A little-known fact about Mr. Tiny:

Mr. Tiny was born in a co-ed Honduran prison as part of the Scared Straight Program.   The first year of his life was spent in the chimpanzee enclosure at Tegucigalpa Municipal Zoo as his genetic make-up is only 98% similar to that of the general human population.  I guess that is two facts.

2. Seven wacky tacky posts that were the mostest:

I think the dress I made Mary for her senior prom
turned out pretty beautifully - if I'm allowed to say that.
More importantly, this blog featured the beautiful
photography of Jessie Stopnik.

For some reason, the Halloween costume that I
made for Mary resonated with people.  I am glad that
it was a hit!

At wacky tacky we try and keep it pretty light.  In fact, subconsciously we avoid controversy at all costs.
We didn't receive any flak for this at all, but it might be deemed controversial to bad-mouth Santa.

What could possibly be more helpful than sharing a delicious and
mildly-bizarre recipe for feeding the hungry stomachs of loyal followers.

Most Surprisingly Successful - June Weddings & Rape Whistles

A rambling post about found photography, weddings, my
grandparents and rape whistles seemed to strike a chord with
some readers.  I knew when I was writing it that it made me
happy, but I didn't know that anybody else would like it.
Actually, that is sort of how I feel about all of my posts.

Most Underrated - Going MarioNUTS!!!

This blog was posted early in the lifespan of wacky tacky so
I'm not sure that many people had a chance to see it
Underrated?  I don't know.  Deserving of more views?  I hope so.

Most Pride-worthy - wacky tacky: A Primer

I am an unwitting defeatist, an unapologetic late-bloomer, and an unabashedly-
lazy human being.  I therefore am most proud of my very first blog.  Proud
simply over the fact that I forced myself to get going!

3. Seven praise-worthy blogs:

My Pretty Baby Cried She Was a Bird - I wish I had a more eloquent way of expressing this sentiment, but the fact is, this blog is extremely well written.  Whether she is talking about her clothes, movies, book reviews (my favorite), or party planning, Lisa has such a unique point of view that one can't help but be pulled into her wonderful orbit.

Ranch Dressing with Eartha Kitsch - This is an inspiring blog that is equally hilarious and sweetly sentimental.  Eartha won me over with her reposting of bizarre craigslist ads and her moving tribute to her neighbor, James.  I don't know how I lived so long without this blog, but I am sure glad I found it!

Thriftaholic - Beautiful photographs and a glimpse into all the things that make Chicago a great city are but two reasons to follow this blog.  The proprietress, Leilani, with her keen eye and uncanny ability to cleverly mix and match wardrobe elements, renews our favorite pastime, "thrifting," by showing readers how it can be a creative outlet, a healthy indulgence, and a lifestyle.

Jessica Stopnik - Sometimes I wish I knew how to use a camera.  Even with modern, "fool proof" technology, I still manage to mess up every frame.  Jessica Stopnik is a gifted photographer who uses her family and her environment to capture the richness of love and life.  The lighting, the mood, the subject, and the eye behind the camera are perfect in every photo.

Wearing History - This blog is a thoughtful, thorough, and sensitive examination of costume history.  Lauren is the most highly-skilled pattern maker, designer, seamstress, dreamer/creator, business owner that I know.  Readers are regularly treated to images of her jaw-dropping creations, scans of historical documents, and beautiful photographs of "What Real People Wore."

Trash You Up - A blogger that offers no apologies for the deep and abiding love of junk and rock & roll,  Erin shows us how cool life can be when you embrace the things you love.  Seriously, the best collection of junk I have ever seen!

Mary-Go-Round - What good is the ability to bestow a major award if one cannot employ the tiniest bit of nepotism?  Sure, Mary is my sister.  Sure, Mary's posts are scattered and infrequent.  Sure, Mary usually features an outfit that I have made for her.  The soul of her blog, however, is her music and hopefully, she will take this as a kick in the pants to start recording and posting more often!

Thanks again to Emily at The Silver Screen Affair, who continues to delight with her inspired blogging.

Cheers!

Awards Season!!!

Thanks to my friend Emily over at the beautifully-named blog, The Silver Screen Affair,  I am having a Sally Field moment.  You like me!!!  Well, at least one of you does.

With gratitude and a humble heart I am the recipient of The ISBA, more commonly referred to as The Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award.  To be perfectly honest, I wonder if a little bit of nepotism was at play as Emily is actually both a blog friend and a real-life friend.  I choose to believe that even if Emily and I were not friends she would be so enamored of my blog that she would use her power to bestow me with all the awards in her award arsenal.  Truly, this award is a great honor.  Though I would have been just as happy to have been nominated.  It has become a bit of a stressor, however, as now I am challenged with pulling the old tuxedo out of mothballs for awards season.  Maybe I am over-thinking it?

As long as I have been blogging, I have wondered who starts blog awards like the The ISBA and how they are perpetuated.  I must say, I am still a little mystified but very glad for the opportunity to participate and to pass along the award to other blogs that I follow and enjoy.  The rules of this award dictate that I must share some fun-facts about myself.  Truth be told, I was more than tempted to simply list the lyrics to Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?"  "I walked 47 miles of barbed wire, Use a cobra snake for a necktie, Got a brand new house by the roadside made out of rattlesnake hide..."  I thought better of it, however, and decided to offer personal information to whom only a few select people are privy.

"Who Do You Love" - Bo Diddley

7 little-known facts about Mr. Tiny:

1.  My birth name is not really Mr. Tiny.  It is SeƱor Tiny.

2.  Despite blog awards indicating the contrary, I am not irresistibly sweet.  I have been told that I am quite resistible and decidedly sour (by my parents....and strangers).

3.  Speaking of my parents, they are immigrants - my dad from East Canton, Ohio and my mom from San Bernardino.

4.  I was asked to play Jane Hudson in the musical adaptation of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" -  but only because I have Bette Davis eyes.

5.  The song "Wild Thing" was written about me while I was sleeping.

6.  I regularly point lasers at police helicopters but I leave out the batteries.

7.  Jimmy crack corn and I DO care.

Blogs to which I would like to pass along The Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award include but are, of course, not limited to:

V is for Vintage
Beth at V is for Vintage uses her vast knowledge and skill in all dances swing to bring readers incredible glimpses into the world of the 1930's and 1940's.  She documents her talents as a designer/seamstress and keeps everyone's swivels in check.

Lil' Vintage Homemaker
Reagan at Lil' Vintage Homemaker is an inspiration.  She cooks, she sews, she repurposes.  My favorite part?  Reagan is a professional milliner and makes the headpieces for Pageant of the Masters  - the ultimate in trompe l'oeil, performance art and tableaux vivant.  Reagan can make anything out of a hat and a hat out of anything.

That's Just Stupid What You Said
This is a blog to which I really look forward.  I rarely laugh aloud at blogs, but Trixie has me in stitches regularly.  It is irreverent, silly, honest and relatable!  The writing is wonderful and I could easily see Trixie's madcap adventures and observations as a TV show.  I don't know her, but I have a feeling she will find this award a combination of funny, nauseating and bothersome; I can't wait to read what she has to say about it.

Seas of Science
Tabitha Esther is a "young lady working in the sciences," but she is so much more.  She is creating "Seas of Science," a science-themed stage show for kids.  It is part Muppets, part Mr. Wizard, part Pee Wee's Playhouse and all rock n' roll.  I know this show is going to be killer!  It gets us in a wacky tacky dither because she is actually making her dream a reality through DIY!

Sweetheart of the Rodeo
Did you feel totally cool and put together when you were a teenager?  Neither did I.  Somehow, Dakota of Sweetheart of the Rodeo is totally cool and put together without trying too hard; I haven't detected even an ounce of pretension or cloying precociousness.  She has developed her own style by abandoning the strict rule book to which many vintage enthusiasts adhere.  Sweetheart of the Rodeo creates a dreamy world of storybook adventures through bucolic farmlands, abandoned houses and seaside retreats.

Thanks again to Emily at The Silver Screen Affair.  If you have not yet had a chance to check out her blog, please do.  Every post is a love letter to old Hollywood.  It is filled with movie reviews, great trivia, poster art, glamorous photographs, movie star biographies and amazing screen shots from the very best in cinema history.

Cheers!
