TLC is TCB: Wives with Beehives

Several months ago, I shared this photo of a
Marimekko outfit that I made for Mary
, remember?

If you recall, I mentioned that it was for a top secret project.  Well, the cat is finally out of the bag.  If you read The Hollywood Reporter or subscribe to some of the same blogs that I follow, like Ranch Dressing with Eartha Kitsch, you may have already heard about a little reality special called, Wives with Beehives, that will air on December 27 on TLC.  Mary and I were asked to be guests at a pool party scene they were filming and you might just catch a brief glimpse of us (no promises) in the show.  While the name, Wives with Beehives, doesn't quite accurately describe the women on the show, it is a catchy title and we will surely be watching - mostly because three of the four stars are our friends!

LESLIE

Leslie as Santa's helper

Leslie Buckley, one of the four featured wives, is already like a celebrity in our neck of the woods.  Statuesque and gorgeous are really the only two words to describe her and she is instantly recognizable.  She is a devoted wife, a mother, and a businesswoman.  Stay tuned for more on Leslie as it appears TLC will be running multiple trailers that feature each of the wives.

DOLLIE

Dollie DeVille, The Rockabilly Socialite doing her thing!

If you follow any vintage lifestyle blogs, then you are probably more than familiar with Dollie DeVille, The Rockabilly Socialite.  Dollie, is a wife, cook, crafter, blogger, and working woman.  Her awesome, 50's prom-themed wedding was featured here on wacky tacky and we know that she and her husband, Zack will win everyone over with their commitment to the vintage lifestyle.

I know it's not about me, but you can see my feet dancing at 0:02-0:02:005 Hahahahaha!!!

AMBER

Amber & Mr. Tiny jumping for joy

You might remember Amber Foxx from being featured a million times on our blog.  Amber Foxx is the preeminent rockabilly songstress of Southern California and has toured the world (most recently returning from a two-week engagement in Australia) with her band.

Amber & the boys (Chris, Tommy, and Bobby)
(Source)

wacky tacky has featured her pink dressing room, her cowgirl/boy birthday party, and the epic desert adventure day we enjoyed with Amber and her husband, Bobby.  We love spending time with these folks and are always welcomed with open arms when we unexpectedly (and frequently) drop by their house.  We told them that they had better get their coattails reinforced because we will most definitely be riding them!  HA!

Aren't they particularly lovable?

We are lucky to count these gals (and their respective husbands) among our friends; I hope that when they become big television stars, they will remember us!  I'm sure that they will give you no reason to do otherwise, but please be kind in your reviews of the show.  Remember, while reality shows may be slightly enhanced versions of what is "real," the people on the show are very REAL with REAL friends who will give you a REAL bop in the kisser if you're crummy about 'em.  I'm so happy for my friends' success and I truly can't wait to see how it all comes together on December 27!  I should mention that there is a fourth wife named Shelby; she can be seen in the first trailer featuring Dollie & Zack.  I don't know her, nor have I ever met her, but I do look forward to getting to know her along with the rest of the viewing audience on December 27.

The whole gang (l to r)
Bobby, Dollie, Zack, Leslie, Amber, Melissa, Nicole, Mary, Bud, and Ben
(Mr. Tiny was playing cameraman)

Wives with Beehives will air on TLC on Thursday, December 27 at 10pm - check your local listings (never thought I'd get a chance to say that)

Cheers!

Mr. Tiny

  1. I usually loathe reality shows but I will definitely check this one out and get all my trapped in the past buddies on board.

    1. I don't usually go in for reality shows either, but I am hoping that this one catches on. Not because I think the "vintage community" needs understanding/acceptance, but because I want my friends to find success in the things they do. It should be interesting as I know that they do NOT get a preview. They will watch along with the rest of us!

  3. Thanks for the tour and links! I am SO excited about this and I don't even know any of these folks. Was that Mary dancing at the pool party in the trailer with Dollie and Zach?

    1. Yes, indeedy! Mary is dancing with some of the other girls and the VERY brief glimpse of dancing feet in the very beginning are ours. Do you think ordering 2,000 headshots to autograph and send to my adoring fans is too much?

  4. I read about this on Eartha's page! It looks amazing! In general, I am a sucker for any and all TLC programming...even the ones that are clearly embarassing. ahem...honey boo boo. This looks amazing. Can't wait to meet the ladies on TV!

Thanks for the kind words Chris! It's rather scary being put "out there" but at least we're in this with good friends. I'm glad that everyone is having fun with it so far!

    1. I don't blame you for feeling a little scared; the show has nothing to do with me and the cameras really freak me out. I don't think you guys have anything to worry about though. The trailer seems like they really just want to get to know who you are - talented, kind, interesting folks!

  7. I saw this on Eartha's blog too. I'll definitely be setting up the DVR while we're out of town! Vintage is about the only thing that could possibly get me interested in a reality TV show. lol I hope for their sakes that they are portrayed accurately! You'll have to let us know. ;) It's so easy for the media to spin things in the direction they want.

    1. Yes, I think I will have to do a follow-up to express my opinions and get yours. I know all of these people to be helpful, talented, generous, and dedicated; I too hope that this is how they are portrayed.

    1. I did leave out Shelby but only because I don't know her well enough to say anything about her - at all really. I am personal friends with the rest of the cast but look forward to meeting/learning about Shelby with the rest of the country!

  10. oh man, i can't wait to see it! i hope they post it online since we don't have cable. i really hope the show shows them in a great light and doesn't try to make them look insane! i can't wait to look at their houses!

    1. I have heard that usually the programs do end up online after the first showing. I don't have TLC so we are going to have a viewing party at a friend's house. Beautiful homes in every case - at least the three that I know. Amber and Dollie have great collections but their houses are VERY tidy and organized!

  12. Ooh, I can't wait! Although I hope it works out better than the last time I saw a fab vintage-aholic lady on TV...it was a gorgeous pin-up model who's name escapes me right now. She was on Anderson, and they gave her a "make-under" and took away her vintage style. The audience seemed to think it was great, but it was a bummer! Doris Mayhem? something like that...
You never can trust those slippery TV editors!

    1. Yes, Doris Mayday was on Anderson. It's all in the editing isn't it? I do think she handled it pretty well; she said she liked the modern look but preferred her vintage styling. We'll see how it all comes together. EXCITED!

  13. Bummed that I don't have cable to watch it. Will have to hopefully catch it online. I've been a fan of Dollie for a long time now (it was through her blog that I found this fab blog) and have been excited to see it since she cryptically mentioned on FB months ago. It'll be awesome to see Dollie and Amber on TV as I've read so much about them and their lives. You better start getting ready for your close up Mr Tiny if they decide to turn it into a regular series.

    1. Yeah, I don't have TLC either so we're forcing ourselves into the home of friends who have a big screen and all the cable channels in the world. It's going to be fun! Hahahaha - they'd better get their wide-angle lens ready if I'm going to b on TV!

    1. Hahahaha!!! Wait until the show has aired to be jealous. Trust me when I tell you that these are great people but we know that the editors wield a lot of power! In the event that Mr. Tiny does make in on screen, I want everyone to please remember that the camera adds a good 65-85 lbs....or something.

    2. Anonymous - Please don't get so upset. The attitudes and opinions of the cast members of "Wives with Beehives" do not necessarily reflect those of wacky tacky management. If one were to engage any or all of the wives in a discourse on specific points of civil rights history, I'm sure one would be able to inform and enlighten these women. Maybe that is a good idea for an episode. SInce you obviously feel so strongly, maybe you could have a guest spot discussing the inequalities and disparities that existed in a time that is so easily romanticized by the wives and others. The show is obviously a very lighthearted look at a small fraction of a tiny subculture that embraces the aesthetics of an era without a deep consideration of the socioeconomic/political factors that might have made that same era oppressive for some. If I were you, I would take the comments in question as an opportunity to educate rather than an opportunity to be offended.

  20. Do you have a dishwasher? Yes, her name is Maria.....oh wow. What a nice comment from such beautiful lady. They dont seem to be as nice as you said they were in your article.

    1. Indeed, they are nice people. It would be impossible for me to be accountable for everything that escapes their lips on a show that is aiming to achieve strong viewer reaction and, more than likely, feeds them controversial dialogue. The subtext of your argument, that anyone with the name Maria is undoubtedly an ethnic minority and therefore a domestic servant, might be a little presumptuous. On wacky tacky we do try and keep it light and polite so I thank you for your contribution and apologize that you were offended by a non-documentary, television program intended for entertainment purposes.

      Delete
    2. "Do you have a dishwasher? Yes, her name is Maria." is an actual quote on the show, not an attempt to associate the name Maria with an ethnic minority and therefore servant.

  21. What could have been more fun that watching friends on TV with Mr. Tiny! I think everytime I saw someone I know on TV I cheered. What a better way to close than with you and Mary dancing! I still have family members talking about your dance floor moves from the wedding. Thanks for coming over my friend, what a fun night, one for the books.

  22. If I were Dollie, I'd be horribly upset at how they edited her... She came off as really catty and downright hateful. I read her blog and was really surprised at how she came off on the show.

    1. Try not to think of Dollie too harshly. Remember, there isn't much about reality tv that is real at all. It isn't just the quick cuts and convenient editing, it is the ridiculous situations, unnatural premise, and forced animus. We sat there and laughed at the whole thing because it is as scripted as a show could be without having them memorize dialogue. The girls aren't allowed to say that, but I am. Think of it as a silly comedy-drama and you'll find the true heart of the show.

      Delete
    2. I totally get that, but it's a damn shame they colored her so harshly. She seems like a really sweet girl, but this show did her zero justice.
